Sealants

What are Sealants?

The form of bonding known as sealants helps prevent decay from starting in back teeth and is of special benefit to children. Sealants are clear or lightly shaded plastics that are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. These tooth surfaces contain deep grooves, pits  and fissures that can trap decay causing bacteria.

How can sealants prevent decay?

Sealants which are bonded into the chewing surfaces of the teeth, forming a protective barrier covering the pits and fissures, thus  helping to keep out  harmful bacteria.. Thus the sealants help prevent cavities from starting. They are an immediate preventive step in preventing tooth decay.

How long do sealants last?

Depending on an individuals chewing pattern, the sealant effect can last for a number of years. At routine appointments we always make sure the sealants are still in place.

Sealants are a one appointment procedure.
