Bonding

This is one of the most conservative, versatile and affordable ways to esthetically restore a multitude of dental problems. It's used to:
Restore cavities in front and back teeth
Replace old or unattractive "silver fillings"
Repair root abrasion (on roots exposed by gum recession or notched by years of aggressive brushing). Covering these areas helps prevent cavities and root sensitivity, while it improves appearance.
Close diastemas (spaces between teeth)
Restore chipped or fractured teeth
Improve or change the color of permanently stained or discolored teeth
Reshape crooked or misshaped teeth

A single tooth can be shaped and colored, or your entire smile can be changed. Bonding also helps protect teeth that are chipped and beginning to wear, preventing further damage to occur. Bonding your teeth with an acrylic or plastic resin can be completed in one appointment.

Bonding involves the use of special dental adhesives, plastic-like materials which are highly polishable and strong, to improve the appearance of teeth. Unlike veneers, which are made at the dental lab, dentists apply the bonding material and sculpt it right at the dental chair. This same material can be used to cosmetically fill back teeth instead of silver fillings. Bonding materials are carefully selected to ensure that the color matches the teeth. Bonding is most commonly used to fill chipped or worn teeth and to make cosmetic corrections to crooked or crowded teeth.

How It Works
First the tooth is chemically treated to "roughen" the enamel, so that the bonding materials will adhere to the tooth. The dentist then applies special dental adhesives, which secure bonding materials on the tooth. The bonding material comes in a number of colors, allowing dentists to make a match with the tooth's color. Once the bonding materials has been secured on the tooth, the dentist shapes and polishes it to give natural appearance. A special "curing light" is used to harden the material.

Once in place, bonding restorations can be very strong. Not every situation can be corrected with bonding though, and alternatives such as veneers or crowns should then be considered.
