Cleanings or Prophy's

Professional cleanings ( prophy's ) by a dentist or dental hygienist are a very important part of dental care and preventive dentistry. Anytime a cleaning is done, an evaluation of your teeth and supporting structures can be made. This is extremely helpful in keeping the mouth at a optimal state of excellent oral health. Cleanings, of course, clean your teeth. If there is any 'tartar' buildup and plaque accumulation on any of the teeth or gums this will be removed, along with any stains ( tobacco, coffee etc..) that you can not remove from brushing and flossing alone. It is important to remove these stains and tartar on a regular basis or more serious problems can occur, such as cavities and gum disease.

Sometimes if you notice a bad taste or odor in the mouth, this can be related to the plaque or tartar buildup on the teeth. So once the teeth are properly and professional cleaned, this odor should be eliminated.

How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

You should have your teeth cleaned every six months, at the least. Some patients need to have cleanings done more often, such as every three months or less, due to every individual's situation. For example, if you have gum problems, are prone to cavities, or have a lot of dental work ,  than it is important to have your teeth cleaned more often.  This way, everything will stay as healthy as possible.

My teeth are sensitive after cleaning?

Let us know this beforehand, because we have special products that will eliminate this problem for you. That way you will never have to worry about having your teeth hurt after a cleaning.  Most people have no sensitivity whatsoever after a cleaning, so there might be some other problems associated here.
